MUI: Change from IP to station name on "Users and Events" screen

Hi everybody,

I wonder how i can make the MUI change the display on "Users and Events" screen.

At Connection status I can see the IP address of the accessing station and I want to change this to the station name. I am running build 23869 on Linux and I added a line to /etc/hosts but this did not help.

Any suggestion?

Thanks...

#of Processors increased degrades performance

I have a DL385 host with 2 dual core 275 Opterons and 8GB of RAM. Running CentOS 4.3 with VMware-server-e.x.p-23869. I created a new guest using VMware-console-e.x.p-23869 on my Windowx XP SP2 machine.

I selected 2 processors when I defined the creation of the guest and installed RHEL ES 4 U3 and at first boot, it took almost 10 minutes to go through the loading of the services. Shutdown was not quite as bad.. but still bad.

After shutdown I switched my memory from 1024 to 512 and dropped cpu's from 2 to 1 and RHEL booted and started speeding through the services quickly.

Any suggestions?

Hi all

I'm about to install debian sarge on a server and it's "only" mission is to run 3 virtual servers with Windows Server 2003. I have 2gb memory. How big should the swap partition in debian be?

Deleting data in Linux virtual machine does not shrink vmdk file

I am running Ubuntu Linux 6.06 LTS in a virtual machine.  I just did a "sudo apt-get clean" which removes downloaded packages.  This deleted several hundred megabytes of files and the hard drive shows more empty space.  However, the vmdk file does not appear to have shrunken along with this deletion of files.

Any ideas as to why this is happening?  Thanks,

Tristan

I'm using VMware Server on a Linux box with 3 different virtual machines. The problem is I need to warranty that virtual machine number 1 is started before the other two when the host starts.

How to do this?

Thanks in advance.

Microsoft XP Pro and Centos 4.3?

I apologize if this question has been answered before, pointing me to the relevant link will be helpful.

I am currently about to install MS XP Pro and Centos 4.3 as a new/clean install, I was going to dual boot before i came across VMWARE.

Is it possible to install Ms as the host and centos as the guest? It seems MS Server is the only host allowed as host from the little i have reading in the forums. I will be using both os regularly.

Many thanks and i have enjoyed reading/learning from the forum.

How can I say vmWare server not to start DHCP-server, vmnet1 and

Hi,

Within my VM I need to map to a shared folder on my host. Therefore I need to enable the vmnet1 (host only) virtual adapter within the virtual network settings of my host.

However, when I click enable and apply, the vmnet1 will stay disabled.

Does anybode know why I can't enable my vmnet1 virtual adapter?

Thnx

System is Dual 3.4 GHz Xeon - 6 GB RAM - SATA HDD's

Running VMWare Server RC 1 on Windows Server 2003 Enteprise R2 Host.

VM's are Windows Server  2003 Enterprise SP1 or Windows Server 2003 Enterprise R2.

Reproducable Error:

Run Command.com from start>run

or

run Edit from start>run

or

any DOS application.

Eventually you will get an error message box titled: ntvdm.exe - System Error

With the Error Text: NTVDM encountered a hard error.

Buttons are: Close and Ignore.

Has anyone experienced this?

Is there a fix or workaround?

Build 27828: "Unable to change virtual machine power state"

After upgrading VMware Server on Debian Woody from build 22874 (Beta2) to 27828 (latest) my VM won't start anymore. Launching "/opt/vmware/bin/vmware -x -l -q /var/lib/vmware/vm/foo/foo.vmx" and starting the VM (which worked fine before) now yields into an error message popup saying: "Unable to change virtual machine power state: The process exited with an error: End of error message."

/var/log/vmware/vmware-serverd.log isn't much more helpful either:

Jun 28 19:49:21: app| SP: Retrieved username: vmware

Jun 28 19:49:21: app| Attempting to launch vmx : /var/lib/vmware/vm/foo/foo.vmx

Jun 28 19:49:21: app| Error during launch: 11, The process exited with an error:

Jun 28 19:49:21: app| End of error message

Jun 28 19:49:21: app| VmsdVmStatePendingCmdFailed: cmd status is already set

Fatal Error: BAD_POOL_CALLER

I'm running VMware Server build  27828.  My host is Windows XP Home and I'm running Windows XP Pro and Windows Server 2003 as VM clients.

After 24 hours of running without incident, this morning my machine crashed (blue screen).  Following is a summary of the error message:

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer..."

BAD_POOL_CALLLER

\*** STOP: 0x000000c2 (0x00000007, 0x000000cd4, 0xf7a15944, 0xf7a1d920)

\----

This same problem occurred while running build 24927 with the following dump:

\*** STOP: 0x000000c2 (0x00000007, 0x000000cd4, 0xf7a15944, 0xf7a15920)

\----

In both cases there does not appear to have been any damage caused by the crash.  Disk checks fine, all open documents recovered, etc.

In both cases I was running and working with  Microsoft VS 6 C++ (SP6) in th Win XP Pro client (256mb mem).  I was running SQL Server services on the Win Server 2003 (384mb mem).  I was also running and working with various Microsoft Office 2003 tools on the host.  I was running and observing Task Manager on all three systems and memory seemed to be plentiful on all systems.

I am very new to VMware, this is just my second week of working with it.  So, I may be doing something very stupid.

Any advice will be appreciated,

Wendy

Run virtual machine in window?

I have virtual server installed and I would like to know if there is a way to run the virtual machine in its own separate window rather than within the VMware server application. I would basically like to have the guest OS as a window with a normal border and title bar (the way vmware player looks) and not have the vmware server title bar, tabs, controls, etc. I tried installing vmware player on the same machine, but found out that's a no-no. Is this possible to do? It occured to me that I could created the virtual machine on one PC with vmware server, and run in on another with vmware player to get the window I'd like, but if this is possible to do just using server, I'd prefer to do it that way.

mount existing partitions

Hello,

I'm now using a dual boot with W2K and Suse 10.1.

I want to shift to vmware.

The problem is that I should use W2K as the host (it's the computer of my firm, everyone here is supposed to work with Windows; I don't have the option of installing the W2k as a vmware guest; and I'm not allowed to make a P2V image of the W2k either).

So Linux will be the guest. But my Suse partitions are huge, full of data. So what I'm considering to do is to install another Linux as a vmware guest. From that guest, will I be able to access and mount my existing Suse data partitions?

Getting Windows Console to connect to Linux Server

Ok, I've got VMWare Server 28343 installed and running on Gentoo 2006.0.  It works, and the Linux console client does connect to it and works.

However, I cannot get the Windows console client to connect to it.  I put in the right IP, root username and correct password, and the console just stops responding.  Running with xinetd 2.3.14.

Any ideas?  Need more info?

Instructions for installing VMWare tools on OpenBSD (no X windows)

$

I tested this on OpenBSD 3.9, 32-bit on a 64-bit Linux host. The installation CD/floppy for OpenBSD 64-bit would not boot at all on my system with a Pentium D 950 CPU.

I don't install X windows on my OpenBSD installs, since I use OpenBSD for firewall and server duties. Hence, I didn't figure out how to make X work.

Configuring OpenBSD on VMware:

1. Set up your VM using the OS Type of FreeBSD. I prefer LSILogic and SCSI disks.

2. Modify the .vmx file and add the line before installation:

Ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000"

3. Install OpenBSD per your preferences.

Steps for VMWare tools:

4. (Optional) Install nano:

pkg_add ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/3.9/packages/i386/nano-1.2.5.tgz

5. Enable kern.emul.freebsd=1:

nano /etc/sysctl.conf

uncomment that line

save

reboot

6. Make /emul/freebsd/sbin directory:

mkdir /emul

mkdir /emul/freebsd

mkdir /emul/freebsd/sbin

7. Mount VMWare tools cdrom:

Install VMWare tools... in the console

mount /dev/cd0c /mnt

8. Extract VMWare tools:

cd /mnt

tar xvzf vmware-freebsd-tools.tar.gz -C /root

9. Find and copy VMWare guestd:

cp /root/vmware-tools-distrib/lib/sbin32/vmware-guestd /emul/freebsd/sbin

10. Find and copy VMWare scripts:

mkdir /etc/vmware-tools

cp /root/vmware-tools/distrib/etc/* /etc/vmware-tools

11. Update rc.local:

add the following before echo '.'

if \[ -x /emul/freebsd/sbin/vmware-guestd ]; then

        echo -n ' vmware-tools'; /emul/freebsd/sbin/vmware-guestd & > /dev/null

fi

12. Modify shutdown, as shutdown from the OpenBSD tools will only halt the machine:

12a. Download source code for shutdown:

cd /usr

cvs -d anoncvs@anoncvs.ca.openbsd.org:/cvs get src/sbin/shutdown

12b. Modify shutdown so that -h is the same as -hp:

cd /usr/src/sbin/shutdown

nano shutdown.c

after line 141, on line 142: add dopower = 1;

save, exit

make

12c. Move old shutdown:

mv /sbin/shutdown /sbin/shutdown.old

12d. Move new shutdown in place:

mv /usr/src/sbin/shutdown/shutdown /sbin

12e. Test shutdown the system:

shutdown -h now

13. While the system is powered down, modify the .vmx file:

tools.syncTime="TRUE"

14. Power up and test the Console and MUI controls. Also, check time sync with the date command.

Vmware host rebooting periodically

I recently upgraded to the the latest release of Vmware and was updating my guests using windows update when a sudden crash and reboot happened during the final phase of .net 2.0 security update on one of my guests.

Now my server reboots every so often for no reason and I've had two VM's crash from corrupted configuration files. I was successful in restoring a copy of a config file from my base config file I use to cloan VM's from.

I'm running Win Serv 2003 Standard w/ 3 gig duo processors and 4 gig of RAM.

The error I see in the event log is:

System Error Category (102)

event ID 1003

Error code 0000004e, parameter1 0000009a, parameter2 00009778, parameter3 00000006, parameter4 00000002
