Vmware on diskless machine

In the quest for running Vmware server on different machines accessing a shared storage, I was thinking... why not eliminate local disks all together?

It's possible to "image" a linux environment with dd - put it all on a compactflash-to-IDE controller - boot the image in a ramdrive and go.

Anyone tried something like this with vmware (gsx?) before?  Problem is you don't have a swap partition, and I'm not sure it will be entirely stable this way!  I'm losing a bit of RAM but I don't care about that.
