Battery Backup for a VM

Is there a way, say through the USB port, to allow the VM to attach to the hosts APC battery backup and thus allow the VM to shut down before the host does?

Is there a way to have VMWare Server be aware that when a shutdown is invoked to immediately issue a Pause on the VM?
