OK,
Still checking out real-time synchronisation (sync or async) possibilities for Vmware server VM's... all solutions seem quite complex to set up.
Now I was wondering about a LVM snapshot/Rsync solution. Basically snapshot the mount with the VM's and Rsync to copy them to backup, saving time due to the rolling checksum method in rsync, then delete the snapshot.
Question is... If I do a LVM snapshot, can I be sure that the (running) Vmware server will be OK? I'm ok with a "dirty shutdown" scenario as I have regular backups as well - I'm just afraid that the VM won't start at all due to some kind of corruption.
