Hi All,
I have a dual 2ghz opteron running a copy of GSX 3.2.1. The host is running 64bit Windows 2003 Server and has 2 gigs of RAM and four virtual machines running on it. Console performance, while not great, is usable. If I try to install a linux guest on it, screen changes take about 1/2 second to paint. My running Windows boxes can be administered easily as long as they have vmware tools installed.
However,
I have a dual 2.8ghz XEON with 2 gigs of RAM. I've tried two linux installs as the host - Ubuntu and Fedora Core 4. In both cases, console performance is extremely sluggish, about 3 to 4 times longer in the above linux install example. Guests run OK as long as they are not being touched with the console. Windows guests do not render when you click on the tab - it takes a combination of tab switches and mouse clicks to get the display to 'wake up'. On the Ubuntu box, booting from an XP install CD, you wouldn't see any display until the installer needed user input.
Is anyone else having this problem, or is it just me? I wanted to go to a linux host solution, but I do need console access for some applications and I'm not finding performance acceptable for this.
Thoughts?
Jason
