Can't access VM through Host with SSH

I have installed VM on Ubuntu 6.06, the VM's OS is Ubuntu 6.10 with the following configuration

1. Networking Option : host only

2. Static IP on VM : 192.168.1.10

3. Gateway and DNS : 192.168.1.74 -> same with Host IP address

I assume that i can access the VM through ssh or telnet, but i just can't access it, the static ip just doesnt work at all

Is there any one knows the perfect configuration from VMware server so i can access the VM just like i access any other physical system
