Short: I installed vmware server (23869) on my Ubuntu-5.10 host once without problem. vmware-config notified me that one of the pre-build modules fit perfectly into my running kernel. After uninstalling and trying a fresh install, I'm told now that none of the pre-build modules for VMWare Server is suitable for my running kernel.
Longer: I had successfully installed the vmware console and management interface, and did successfully launch the console program. After logging out and logging in again, I could no longer launch the console. I had been following the installation instructions in the release notes, and later noticed that in the Administration Guide (pdf) it mentions:
"Caution: Do not install a console from a client installer package onto the VMware Server host."
I decided to uninstall / reinstall VMWare server because I thought I may have messed up the install by installing the server and console on the same machine.
Does anyone know what might have happened to make the VMWare server config script no longer think it had a suitable pre-built vmmon module for my host? I did install a few required programs for the mui and console after installing server (xinetd for one) - could that be the problem? While I'm sure the process of finding the kernel sources for Ubuntu and compiling my own custom vmmon module would be a nice learning experience, it's something I'd rather avoid. Any suggestions as to how I might get a pre-built vmmon module recognized as "suitable" again?
Thanks for the help.
