eth1 == vmnet2 bridge sniffing not getting packets

I have two Ethernet adapters in my host RHEL4 Linux box.  Eth0 is the main connection and is bridged to vmnet0 in the vmware-config.pl for all the bridged guests,  that works fine.

I have a seperate eth1 card installed in the host that is connected to a span port on my switch to allow traffic sniffing.  Its configured in vmware-config.pl to bridge with vmnet2 and on the host I can sniff traffic and use tcpdump -i eth1 and vmnet-sniffer /dev/vmnet2 to see that traffic is passing on this interface and the bridge.

However…  in any guest OS that I attach the second custom defined Ethernet to vmnet2  I cannot see any traffic except a few broadcast packets.

Something is being lost in vmware server somewhere.   Im running 1.0.1 of the free server.

I have tried guests of windows and linux but neither can see data from the eth1/vmnet2 interface

Any ideas?
