Convert vmware image to physical disk

I've been working with a variety of XP configurations under SuSe 10 which although worked well was hampered by a poor graphics card implementation that my 19" monitor displayed a mediocre image.

I decided to see if I could easily move the image to a physical disk. It was straight forward so here's how I did it...

I downloaded a 15 day trial of Acronis home duplication software. You'll find it here http://www.acronis.com. I had tried Ghost 2003 but I couldn't get it to work, I think because I didn't do the next required step.

Before running the XP image under VMware, I added a physical drive (the new drive I wanted to duplicate the image to) in the VMware configuration menu. Be sure to select the physical and not a virtual drive.

When XP came to life I found the additional raw drive and moved to the next step - duplication.

I ran the demo software and selected clone the XP partition created under WMware to the new drive that VMware could see as it was added before booting.

It worked! When it finished copying the 50GB an hour later I shutdown the system, unhooked the VMware drive and replaced it with the new drive.

The new drive came to life but kept rebooting during the initial boot cycle. This was because the VMware drivers were completely foreign to the underlying Dell PC. The next simple step for to use my XP Pro install CD to repair the installation it found and re-register the XP software when everything came back to life.

I have not found any issues at all, and my total cost was about 3 hours including an hour of fiddling.

Good luck in your duplication adventures.
