Hi,
I'm running Vmware Server 1.0.0 build 27828 on CentOS 4.3 on Dell Poweredge 4600 with 8GB RAM.
The objective I have is to run a number of Oracle test / development environments on this server, each in their own VM. I have been trying to create VMs with 4GB of memory allocated to them.
I've had several problems with this:
1) Maximum amount of memory I can create a VM with is 3600MB - it won't accept a larger number.
2) When I try and install CentOS or RHEL into the VM, the VM crashes part way through having had the vmware-vmx process killed by oom.
3) If I copy a prebuilt VM onto the host and increase the memory allocation to 3600M, the VM will start and run OK untill the application running on it is stressed, then the VM crashes with the oom killing the vmware-vmx process.
Upon investigating the memory usage, I can see the memory used by vmware-vmx process climbing until it reaches about 1.5GB, then it is killed. This happens when the host is not running any other significant processes and has plenty of free memory.
I don't know whether this is a problem with my Host Linux OS configuration, the VMWare Server software or even a memory fault on the hardware - I'm not a Linux sysadmin...
Can anyone shed some light please?
Thanks,
David
