USB devices not usable under VMware Server

I've installed VMware Server under SuSE Linux 10.0 and make a VM of WinXP.

It installs software as expected and can connect to the Internet without problems.

However it has serious issues when handling USB devices:

With USB flash drives VMware crashes. This may be due to the 'auto-open' option in SuSE (I guess it can be disabled, but that will make using flash drives impossible).

Also I wanted to install the following USB 1.1 devices:

Canon Pixma iP1000 (printer): the driver & utilities installed correctly and it is in a virtual USB port. But it doesn't print at all (it appears as disconnected)

Canon Lide 25 (scanner): haven't tested this device yet.

Are anyone having problems with USB devices? If not, how can I use them?
