I am about to setup a large test environment on a HP ML530 Generation 2 server. Currently we have been running this on a Windows 2003 platform but I have found the performance, especially disk IO to be very poor. Since we started also using an ESX 3.1 server (DL585) it has highlighted the fact more. The whole server just seems a little sluggish. Spec wise it is a dual 3.o ghz zeon, 4GB ram and over 1TB of 15K scsi drives.
Does anyone know if using a nix based platform for virtual server would help? Does it offer much improvment over a Windows based one.
The host server itself will not be participating in our Windows domain so AD membership is not an issue.
Any pointers to improve performance would also be welcome
