We are currently using MS Virtual Server but are looking to move to VMWare Server. Holding us up right now though is the number of virtual machines we can run. On Virtual Server with 4GB RAM, a single 3.2 GHz P4 CPU, and a 160GB SATA HD we get 6 Virtual Machines the perform adequately for our users. On the same hardware we are lucky to get 4 running under VMWare Server. After a little digging it looks like disk is the bottleneck. Even with 4 virtual machines on VMWare if one reboots the disk queue length shoots up. If two reboot at the same time the disk queue length just gets crazy.
We are running VMWare server and MS Virtual Server on Windows 2003 SP1
Has anyone else seen this really bad disk performance? How many VMs are others running in VMWare server on Windows?
