USB HD: not a valid physical disk device ?

I am attempting to make an FC6 installation onto a USB connected hard disk, which I will then transplant into an appliance type device, which would otherwise be difficult to install onto.

My Host OS is an Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 LTS distro.

When setting up a new VM, I opt for a physical disk.  The wizard only offers two options in the subsequent drop-down of disk choices - both of which are the internal HD's of my host.  If I manually enter the device of the USB disk (/dev/sdc), I receive the message:

Unable to complete wizard: The specified device is not a valid physical disk device.

This is not[/b] a permissions problem.  The error occurs as root and as my regular user (both of which have rw access to the disk and its partitions).

The USB disk is completely unmounted during this process (no problems with the disk being mounted on host and guest simultaneously).

I belileve this can be done with QEMU, but I already have VMware Server installed, so I'd like to use it if possible.

Any suggestions?
