USB Controller initialization failed in XP

When I start up any virtual machine with USB present I get this message:

USB controller initialization failed. A supported host USB driver was not found. If you have installed USB traffic monitoring software on the host system, please remove it.

Virtual USB controller has been disconnected.

I am running Windows XP and the USB drivers are standard Microsoft issue.  I have tried forcing other drivers but it doesn't work.  I have reloaded Windows XP c/w SP2 to no avail.

Any idea what I might be doing wrong or what USB drivers are considered "supported" if the microsoft ones aren't.

Thanks for any help on this.

Chris
