Changing Computer Name on a Windows machine

I am running Workstation 5.5 and built a base image of a Win2K3 Server so I didnt have to built a new one each time I needed to gin a machine. I took that image and cloned it and now I am trying to change the name of the machine. Windows will let me rename the machine fine, but when I go to a command prompt line within the virtual machine, I am unable to ping the new name. The base image was called winbase, I wanted the machine to be named im4vm1. I have hacked through the registry and changed the old name everywhere I could find it and I was able to successfully ping the newer name. But now I am able to ping the winbase name and the im4vm1 name from the command prompt line, but both names have different IP addresses and I only have one machine online and no domain controller running. Is there a better way of changing names on a machine and making sure the old name does not exist? I looked for a way I could run a script from the command line and change the computer name, but I didnt find any suggestions on that scenario.
