Generic SCSI device - HP SDLT 320

I have a Compaq Proliant 5500 running 2003 Server with an HP SDLT 320 tape drive.  I have a 2000 Server SP4 set up as a virtual server on that box and I am trying to get it to recognize the tape drive.  When I add a generic SCSI device I get several choices to assign the device to but none of them bring up the tape drive.  It looks like I am seeing the three logical drives I have set up on the host machine and then a SCSI2 device which I thought was the tape drive but from what I can tell does not add anything to the virtual machine.

Is there a specific SCSI card that VMWare likes?  I've tried running it on the fast-wide SCSI2 controller that comes on the daughter board in the 5500 as well as an Ultra SCSI3 card that has been used specifically for the SDLT drives.  By the way, both setups allow the tape drive to function correctly on the host machine.  HELP!!!

Thanks.
