Virtual Machine doesn't see physical CD-ROM drive on Host

New to VMWare.  Trying to setup a Win98SE virtual machine.  Specified to use the CD-ROM in the computer, but when starting the virtual machine, I get

Cannot connect virtual device ide0:1. No corresponding device is available on the host.

The CD drive contains the Win98SE upgrade disk and can be seen by the physical computer okay.   The connection is set to Use physical drive ont the Host with Auto Detect, but the virtual machine doesn't seem to see it.

I want to boot from the CD so I can install Win98SE.

What am I missing?

Computer is a Dell Latitude D800 running WinXP SP2
