Centos 4.4 bridged networking problem

I am trying to install vmware in Centos 4.4 ( RHEL clone )

I used the rpm to install

I ran /usr/sbin/vmware-config.pl

I enabled one of each type of interface bridged, nat and host only

nat and host only work.

however since this is for a server application bridged is the only usable connection for me which I cannot get working.

My machine has 1 network interface eth0

which has multiple virtual ip's assigned to it.

I have a static ip setup there is no dhcp server for me to get a ip address from.

here is the results of /sbin/ifconfig

\[root@www etc]# /sbin/ifconfig

the bridged connection should be vmnet0 but it does not show.

when I try to use a bridged connection I get a error saying it is disabled.

and

/sbin/ifconfig vmnet0 up

vmnet0: unknown interface: No such device

anyone have any ideas what I should try?
