Hi,
on a dual opteron server with w2003 sbs I have one vm running windows nt 4 sp6 server terminal server edition. I use VMware Server 1.01.
First of all: this vm runs fine. It was created with an Acronis TrueImage restore inside the newly created vm. VM Tools are installed in the vm.
The cpu load on the host is always 50% for the vmware-vmx.exe process even when the vm is absolutely idle! The task manager shows a cpu load of about 80% for cpu1 and about 20% for cpu2.
There are no database servers installed in the vm. When I suspend the vm the cpu load goes down to 0% for the vmware-vmx.exe process. When I shut down the vm, the overall cpu load goes down to less than 3% for all processes.
When I copy the stopped vm to my notebook and start it there (also with VMware Server 1.01), the host shows a normal cpu load for the vmware-vmx.exe process (<5%) when the vm is idle. My notebook has only one processor (pentium m).
Could this be a problem of the two processors on my server? How can I reduce the host cpu load? I want to run a second vm on this server, but so far I fear that this would stall my server.
Any help is much appreciated.
Andreas
