shrink, defrag, size not reduced

$

I am using windows 2003 server as host and as guest. I have virtual growable disks splitted in 2 GB slices.

One vmdk-file has 25 GB of size. I have deleted files some files in the guest system. So I have released 5 GB of space.

Over the weekend there was running a scpript on the host  to reorganize the vmdk-files.

First I have used the following command to defrag the virtual disk:

vmware-vmdiskmanager - d disk1.vmdk

After that I want to shrink the virtual disk using this command:

vmware-vmdiskmanager -k disk1.vmdk

But unfortunatly the size is not reduced. What is wrong ?

Shoult I first shrink an then defrag ?

Are there any other options which I should activate ?

Thanks in advance

vmware server beta3 on mandriva 2006_64, Athlon64 3800, win2000 guest

Problem: A brand new install works fine and win2000 finds a USB hard drive without problem; get popup windows about installing drivers, don't need to mount via the VM menu option, can access the contents.

\_Every_ other attempt, with the same or different USB hard drive fails.  Nothing spontaneously happens, if use menu VM -> Removable -> the hard drive whose name is in the list, get popup warning:

"The existing driver (usb-storage) could not be successfully disconnected (Operation not permitted).  Unload the driver manually, then try again"

Not fixed by rebooting vmware or the computer.  Can't seem to find said usb-storage driver to delete.  Looks like a bug?

Any ideas would be welcome

Does VMware Server support an IEEE-1394 FireWire Interface?

I am running VMware Server on RedHat Linux Enterprise 4.0.  I created a Virtual Machine on VMware, running MS Windows XP Professional and am running an MS Windows application in the MS Visual Studio 2005 Development Environment that needs to poll the PC for an IEEE-1394 FireWire Interface and it does not seem to be able to recognize that that the 1394 port actually exists.

Impossible to Login locally

Hi,

i have a blatant problem which is slowing starting to kill my life hour after hour.

This is all the more simple to describe :

I cannot login at all with VMware Server Console.

Now, i see no good reason for that :

I'm using Windows XP SP2, have been installing the latest VMWare server version (1.0.1), and am trying to login locally, so no remote connection in place. Of course, i've got full administrative privileges.

So there is really something wrong here.

Other Vmware products (Vmware players and Vmware Workstation) have been working nicely on this computer up to now, so this clearly has something to do with the login sequence only.

I don't even understand what the console asks me :

Host Name : ???? Localhost ? 127.0.0.1 ?

User Name : ????? admin ? administrator ? login name ? what what ?

Password : even worse

Whatever the combination, the process always end with a connection problem, mostly stating that the connexion was explicitly refused (when using localhost as the target host).

I believe to have used on another computer an older version (bêta) of Vmware Server, which did not asked me so many questions to connect locally. So Why ????

What's trully irritating, is that i can't find any help anywhere on that problem even after searching hours on Internet and VMTN. As if it was so trivial that no one cared to write a single line of documentation on it.

Problems opening apps that use files with OCX extension

$

Hello All!  My first time posting.

Has anyone evercome across the problem of not being able to open an application and the eror message is like the following:

Run-time error '372':

Failed to load %FileName% from anyname.OCX. Your version of anyname.OCX maybe outdated. Make sure you are using the version of the control that was provided with your application.

I'm leaning towards a video issue with VMWare, because the same app will run fine on the host.  So, if anyone has encountered such an error and also solved it, please let me know.

Thanks.

Operation on file xxx.vmdk failed

Have a W2K host running W2K guest with MS SQL 2000.  At random times, about 2 to 50 hours between occurances, the guest 'hangs'.  With remote console we connect and there is a pop up with the following message, a response of retry 'frees' the guest, even if is has been many hours.  The events are logged in the host application  log, but no events in the guest.  I have looked everywhere without success for some thing that would lock the file.  It is not even the same file, sometimes it is the first segment, sometimes another drive altogether.  Tech Support has been no help.  Has any one seen this before and was a solution found?

Linux VLAN's and vmware..

$

I have a linux guest OS setup w/ a RH9 machine(kernel 2.4.20-39) acting as a router.. this machine is bridged via Vmware and uses VLAN tagging via the Linux 8021q module to the network it is routing. The other interface is bridged as well(on a secondary physical port) and is not VLAN'ed.

The trouble is that the hosts in the routed 'net are not using tagging and this is causing a MTU problem. The routed hosts use an MTU of 1500 which is translated to 1504(4 byte 802.1q header added) by the switch when the packet reaches the VM.. any packets >1500 bytes are not being seen by the VM host. The 8021q tagging being done by linux in the VM is using a 1496 MTU(1500 - 4 for the VLAN tag).. I believe this is dependent on the pcnet32 NIC.

Is there any way to get it to use 1504 bytes for 802.1q tagging?

Thanks.

Why are the Graphics so Dreadful?

$

I'm using Mandrake 10 as a guest OS on GSX Server 3.1 but the graphics are dreadful.

VMware Tools installed ok with 'VMware virtual video card' showing in hardware settings. Screen resolution is 1024x768 with color quality set at 16 bit to match the Host OS.

My own websites and others look dreadful via any browser installed into Mandrake including Opera, Mozilla and Konquerer.

I've tried several versions of Mandrake inluding those that are officially supported and also tried installing them into VMware Workstation with the same results, very poor graphics.

XP, Win98 etc all give good results, why is this an issue for Linux and more importantly, is there a fix?

USB conversion to COM modem

$

Hi,

I have a Windows 2000 SP4 box with VMware GSX 3.1 installed.  A USB modem was purchased and needs to be added to one of the Virtual Machines.  I can see the modem on the host but since it is a USB to COM conversion modem, I am not receiving the option to add the COM port to the virtual machine and I have already shared the USB with this virtual machine.  Is there anything I can do to make this work or should we purchase a new COM port modem?

Vmware console, blank screen, failed to launch the MKS client

While trying to access an virtual machine via gsx-console, the following error occurs:

Apr 11 12:07:00: vmui| Unable to view the virtual machine's screen: Failed to launch the MKS client: Das System kann den angegebenen Pfad nicht finden[/b]

Any idea what it does mean ?

We are just migrating our local clients from one windows-domain to an other. Using the old one, everything works fine. But migrating from the old one to the new one creates the error( copying existing profiles). We can connect to the VM, but no display is viewable ? Even reinstalling vmware-console doesn't work

Any Ideas ?

Hello Forum,

when i did installing my gsx on sles9 the installer told me to change to port 904 (i think he did this because 902 was in /etc/services). now delete this entry and want to change it back to 902. using vmware-config.pl looks good, but when i restart xinetd i get the message

in /var/log/messages.

xinetd-session looks good:

Microsoft OEM Licenses

$

Hello

I don't know if I am in the right forum to be asking this question or if it has been asked before but......

I have GSX Server installed on all my servers at work and want to install MS Windows Server 2003 OEM as a virtual machine.

I heard on the grapevine that Microsoft don't allow OEM licenses to be installed as a virtual machine.  So with this I phoned the Microsoft Licensing Helpline to ask them.

I told them the situation - that I have VMWare GSX Server and wanted to install an OEM license and asked if they allowed it.  Their response was - "I don't know, you will have to look on the box that disks came in or contact the manufacturer of your virtual machine software", which i found quite commical really.

So to cut a long story short, can I install an OEM license

on a virtual machine?

Any help on this would be great

PCNet-PCI II Dos ODI driver crashs VM under GSX 3.2

$

I use a DOS 7.01 Bootdisk Image that works under Workstation 5 really fine.

Unter GSX 3.2 the Dos ODI driver crashs the VM.

The error Msg:

The Master Boot Record (MBR) of this virtual machine's hard disk does not contain valid bootstrap code. It is likely that the MBR was corrupted by an incorrect guest operating system installation or some other reason. The virtual machine cannot continue and will now power off. (For advanced users: the MBR ist the last disk sector accessed by the virtual machine befor the error.) Pleas consult out Web site at "http://www.vmware.com/info?id=18" for common troubleshooting help.

I think to write the information on this Web site is not helpfull is redundant....

Has anybody a working Dos driver for GSX ? Or a bugfix ?

vmdk-File corrupted after host crashed

$

Hi everybody,

I can´t start my virtual machine - in the vm-console I always get this error:

"unable to open either the disk /data1/win2004.vmdk or the redo log ./win2004.vmdk.REDO_jcswXA.

Failed to configure disk scsi0:3. The virtual machine cannot be powered on with an unconfigured disk.

So,

what happened ?

Long time ago I saved a snapshot of this machine. I didn´t need it anymore so in the vm-console I said "Remove snapshot".

This took some time - BUT during this my vm-ware host crashed down !

After I powered it on again I tried to start the virtual machine again - but received the error mentioned above.

Seems the disk-file ist corruped because the crash occured just during the merge of the vmdk and the redos.

So,

what´s the configuration ?

SuSE Linux 9.2 with GSX Server 3.1 on it.

The virtula machine is a Windows2003 with 3 SCSI disks configured.

So,

what´s the question ?

How can I repair a corrupted vmdk-file ????

Searched around here in the forums and found lots of people having similar problems - but I found no solution...

Best regards

Th. Jalas
