Time Stamp counter?

$

I have a dual-opteron system that runs GSX 3.2 normally. So, I swapped the system raid to give the beta a test run.

I installed SuSE 10.0 and installed VMware server from rpm, entered the vmware-config.pl config command and was met by this:

Your processors do not have a Time Stamp Counter.  VMware Server will not run on this system.

Execution aborted.

Any ideas please?

Cluster shared disks

I am trying to build test cluster setup to VMWare server. But when I create new partition to shared disk other node will see that partition only after I will reboot the server. This is also same thing if I will drop file to formated disk which is seen by both of the servers.

Here is my configuration for shared disks

diskLib.dataCacheMaxSize = "0"

scsi1.sharedBus = "virtual"

disk.locking = "false"

scsi1.present = "TRUE"

scsi1:0.mode = "persistent"

scsi1:1.present = "TRUE"

scsi1:1.fileName = "..\SHARED\lun2.vmdk"

scsi1:1.writeThrough = "FALSE"

scsi1:1.mode = "independent-persistent"

scsi1:1.deviceType = "disk"

scsi1:1.redo = ""

scsi1:2.present = "TRUE"

scsi1:2.fileName = "..\SHARED\lun3.vmdk"

scsi1:2.writeThrough = "FALSE"

scsi1:2.mode = "independent-persistent"

scsi1:2.deviceType = "disk"

scsi1:2.redo = ""

scsi1:3.present = "TRUE"

scsi1:3.fileName = "..\SHARED\lun4.vmdk"

scsi1:3.writeThrough = "FALSE"

scsi1:3.mode = "independent-persistent"

scsi1:3.deviceType = "disk"

scsi1:3.redo = ""

scsi1:4.present = "TRUE"

scsi1:4.fileName = "..\SHARED\lun5.vmdk"

scsi1:4.writeThrough = "FALSE"

scsi1:4.mode = "independent-persistent"

VMnet Config Question

The VMnet adapters on my host machine (Win2k3) are running @ 100Mbit.  Is it possible to run them @ 1000Mbit?

I want to use iSCSI initiated from the guest OSes to the host as a target, but I would like to do it over a gigi network and not the 100Mbit of the physical/bridged interface.

Installing VMware Server on CENTOS 4.3 on AMD x86_64

I'm having a bit of difficulty running vmware-config.pl

I get the following output:

The correct version of one or more libraries needed to run VMware Server may be

missing.  This is the output of ldd /usr/bin/vmware:

        linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xffffe000)

        libm.so.6 => /lib/tls/libm.so.6 (0xf7fbd000)

        libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0xf7fb9000)

        libpthread.so.0 => /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0 (0xf7fa7000)

        libX11.so.6 => not found

        libXtst.so.6 => not found

        libXext.so.6 => not found

        libXt.so.6 => not found

        libICE.so.6 => not found

        libSM.so.6 => not found

        libXrender.so.1 => not found

        libz.so.1 => not found

        libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/libc.so.6 (0xf7e7b000)

        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xf7fe9000)

This program cannot tell for sure, but you may need to upgrade libc5 to glibc

before you can run VMware Server.

Everything runs smoothly after that but when it comes to ask for the serial I get:

/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx: error while loading shared libraries: libX11.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

The serial number (my serial number here) is invalid.

Please enter your 20-character serial number.

Type XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX or 'Enter' to cancel:

So I've looked for the library and it does appear in

./usr/X11R6/lib64/libX11.so.6

./usr/X11R6/lib64/libX11.so.6.2

As do all of the libraries that vmware-config.pl is complaining about

And /usr/X11R6/lib64 is in the ld.so.conf.d directory in the file xorg-x11-x86_64.conf

Anyone able to assist?

Kerbros errors on virtual server

My Windows 2003 Ent server blue screens nightly and when checking the event log I get the following error:

Event Type:     Error

Event Source:     Kerberos

Event Category:     None

Event ID:     4

Date:          11/04/2006

Time:          23:09:54

User:          N/A

Computer:     VMSERVER

Description:

The kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server host/servername1.domain.com.  The target name used was cifs/servername2.domain.com. This indicates that the password used to encrypt the kerberos service ticket is different than that on the target server. Commonly, this is due to identically named  machine accounts in the target realm (DOMAIN.COM), and the client realm.   Please contact your system administrator.

Any idea why I can't use USB on a linux host/win2k3 guest? I get a malfunction message on windows and on the vmware log I saw the following! it seemed to work once but it only worked the very first time after a reboot as soon as I shutdown/restarted the VM it quit working again.

We have 1 HP dl385 running Windows 2003 R2 64 Bit Server Service Pack1 (up to date with patches).  We have 3 guest vm servers running Windows 2003 Standard SP1 and they are all up to date with patches as well. 2 of the 3 host are running fine. One of the three can not see the network i.e., can’t send or receive any packets on either the virtual or physical networks. This VM has been running for 3 months with no problem. We had to roll back to a snapshot  (owning to a Microsoft Exchange issue, nothing to do with the Virtual Machine itself) that was taken when the system was in a know good state. When we first got the snapshot up we were able to get the interface up by disabling and enabling it. We have verified that the network settings are identical to the other servers that are running properly. Now we cannot get the network interface up at all. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

vmware server beta3 on mandriva 2006_64, Athlon64 3800, win2000 guest

Problem: A brand new install works fine and win2000 finds a USB hard drive without problem; get popup windows about installing drivers, don't need to mount via the VM menu option, can access the contents.

\_Every_ other attempt, with the same or different USB hard drive fails.  Nothing spontaneously happens, if use menu VM -> Removable -> the hard drive whose name is in the list, get popup warning:

"The existing driver (usb-storage) could not be successfully disconnected (Operation not permitted).  Unload the driver manually, then try again"

Not fixed by rebooting vmware or the computer.  Can't seem to find said usb-storage driver to delete.  Looks like a bug?

Any ideas would be welcome

/tmp is full and all vms are shutdown automatically

Hi,

I installed GSX v3.2.1 in RH AS3.0 and had about 6 VMs.

Yestoday, I found that all VMs were shutdowed.

So, I checked the messages and I found something was odd.

When I used command "lsof" to check out the /tmp the messages as below.

when I used "du" to check disk space utilization and it always show 72MB.

Then I used "df" to check the disk space utilization again and it show 1.2GB.

The files'(ram0' ram1....) size still increase and when /tmp is full and then all VMs shutdown.

My HW spec is 2-way with 5GB memory

Thanks

Vincent

Can not run Mdaemon on latest version Server

Hi,

I'm trying to get Mdaemon 9.x to work under Server Beta RC1. VM runs Server 2003 Enterprise SP1. Mdaemon install goes fine. But when I try to start Mdaemon for the first time the service crashes. The eventlog show a Dr Watson error and even DEP raises its ugly head.

Dr Watson says: The application, C:\Program Files\MDaemon\App\MDaemon.exe, generated an application error The error occurred on 06/16/2006 @ 22:02:30.185 The exception generated was c0000005 at address 014A4690 ()

Anybody got any idea's? Help would be greatly appreciated because I really need Mdaemon to run in a VM.

Fatal Error: BAD_POOL_CALLER

$

I'm running VMware Server build  27828.  My host is Windows XP Home and I'm running Windows XP Pro and Windows Server 2003 as VM clients.

After 24 hours of running without incident, this morning my machine crashed (blue screen).  Following is a summary of the error message:

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer..."

BAD_POOL_CALLLER

\*** STOP: 0x000000c2 (0x00000007, 0x000000cd4, 0xf7a15944, 0xf7a1d920)

\----

This same problem occurred while running build 24927 with the following dump:

\*** STOP: 0x000000c2 (0x00000007, 0x000000cd4, 0xf7a15944, 0xf7a15920)

\----

In both cases there does not appear to have been any damage caused by the crash.  Disk checks fine, all open documents recovered, etc.

In both cases I was running and working with  Microsoft VS 6 C++ (SP6) in th Win XP Pro client (256mb mem).  I was running SQL Server services on the Win Server 2003 (384mb mem).  I was also running and working with various Microsoft Office 2003 tools on the host.  I was running and observing Task Manager on all three systems and memory seemed to be plentiful on all systems.

I am very new to VMware, this is just my second week of working with it.  So, I may be doing something very stupid.

Any advice will be appreciated,

Wendy

Error 2894 during Windows XP install of Server

$

When I install the latest Server version (28343), after I click the first "Next" button, I receive a pop-up saying:

Error 2894.Internal Error 2894. 126[/b]

After clicking "OK" the pop-up disappears and the "Finish" button appears.  If I press it, the installer closes cleanly, but with nothing installed.

I am logged in as an Administrator and this is the first version of Server I've tried to install on this machine.  I've been using Server on another XP box ever since it was released earlier this year.  Any ideas?

Network on guest OS keeps dying.

I am running VMware-server-1.0.0-28343.i386.rpm on CentOS 4.3 x86_64  The guest OS is Windows 2000 AS.  I have bridged eth1 to vmnet0.  Everything works fine for about 15-20 minutes, then my connection drops.  I get disconnected from IRC, and my Terminal Server dies.

What could be causing this?

vmrun list via PHP

$

I am trying to list my virtual machines using php.  When I am on the HOST I am able to run:

     $ vmrun list

And I get back this:

     Total running VMs: 1

     /opt/vmware-servers/myvm/myvm.vmx

I have the following code which executes on the HOST:

     <?php

     $vmrun_result = shell_exec('vmrun list');

     print $vmrun_result;

     ?>

The response I get back is:

     Total running VMs: 0

Does anyone have any ideas what I need to do to get the correct response from within PHP?  Could it be a permissions problem?  Do I need to use sudo so that the apache user can run vmrun properly?

I would like to be able to get this command to run "vmrun suspend" on the guest, but until I get a proper response from vmrun list, I don't think it will work.

Thanks!

Sean

P.S.:  My setup is this:

Fedora Core 2 (host)

Fedora Core 5 (guest)

Apache 2

PHP 4.3.10

How to forward host \*alias* IP address traffic to a virtual machine?

$
0
0

I have a tricky networking setup that I really need some advice on.  The story goes like this: we have a new physical host at a well-known hosting company (VMware Server 1.0.1, RHEL, 2.6.x kernel).  We requested 8 IP addresses for the setup, thinking that we would use VMware's bridged networking, and assign the 7 unused IP addresses to virtual machines.

However, what we were given was (a) 1 (primary) IP address for the host, and (b) 8 IP addresses \*in a different subnet* which were all set up as alias IP addresses for the host.  This means that we can't use bridged networking, since the virtual machines can't have an IP address in the same subnet as the host's primary IP address.

The situation will be workable if we can forward the traffic from each alias IP address to a particular virtual machine.  While VMware's NAT supports port forwarding, it doesn't distinguish between traffic addressed for the primary IP address and traffic address for an alias IP address.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to use "iptables" to forward traffic from a particular alias IP address to a particular IP address in a (VMware) private subnet?  Or is it impossible to distinguish whether the traffic was addressed for the primary IP address or an alias IP address?  I'm new to IP address aliasing.  Any help will be very greatly appreciated.  Thanks a lot in advance,

Cheers, Tony.

I have a VM Citrix box.  We currently use a product called UltraMon for dual dispaly on standard desktops.  I'd like the Citrix users to be able to use a dual dispaly for multiple applications.  When I run the Citrix session I'm unable to move the screen to different monitor.  The only think I can move is the Program Neighborhood window otherwise all apps launch in the same window.  I know Citrix has support for dual monitors with PS4 which is running on my VM but I'm also not sure if this is a VM issue or not.  Can anyone help?

ld.so error when running vmware from VMware-server-1.0.1-29996 on Linux

Hello there,

For a few weeks I have been happily using vmplayer installed from VMware-player-1.0.2-29634.i386.rpm and it works great.  Now I have also installed VMware-server-1.0.1-29996.i386.rpm .  vmware-vdiskmanager works fine, but vmware does not:

/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware: undefined symbol: ZN4view6HeaderC1ERKN4Glib7ustringENS09AlignmentE

Then it exits.  The problem occurs when vmware tries to open a window.  The window flashes up for a fraction of a second then the program exits with the error message given above.  Is it a problem of VMware-server-1.0.1 or a clash with VMware-player-1.0.2 ?
