I really only have experience with ESX... My boss wants me to do a quick comparison of ESX, GSX, and Virtual Server 2005.
I know that ESX supports the following
Setting CPU Min/Max for each VM
Setting CPU priority for each VM
CPU affinity (attach a VM to a certain CPU)
Support SMP (Multi-processor VMs)
Share memory between VMs
Able to over-commit memory
NIC bonding
NIC throttling
Optimized File System for large files (VMFS)
I'm sure you can all tell me which of these features GSX supports... I'm hoping some of you might know if Virtual Server 2005 does or does not support these features as well.
Also, does anyone have a rough rule of thumb on the number of VMs GSX and Virtual Server 2005 can support on a 4-way 16 GB server?
20 VMs per 4-way is about what I'm getting using ESX. I know it depends on individual load, but if I took those same 20 VMs on ESX, how many could run on GSX and how many could run Virtual Server 2005? Looking for a very rough number here. I'm thinking 10-12 from what I've read, but would like to hear your thoughts...
Thanks.
