How to get networking to work?

Folks,

I have got VMWare server exp build-22874 installed on a Windows XP SP2 box and I have Suse Linux 10 set up as a virtual machine.  I am connected to the internet via an ADSL modem which doubles up as the default gateway.  I have configured the Suse Linux VM to use "bridged" networking.  Now here's the problem:

While I am able to "ping" the Suse Linux guest system from my XP host I am not able to access any of its services.  I have, for instance, a mail daemon running on Suse Linux that I am not able to connect to from XP.  Configuring Outlook Express for instance to use my Suse Linux system as the SMTP server produces the following error:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'abc', Server: '192.168.1.6', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F[/i]

If it is any help, if I try to telnet[/i] to that service it gets connected sucessfully but no further traffic seems to happen!

Conversely, I am not even able to "ping" the XP host from the Suse Linux system.  The VM machine is completely oblivious to the presence of the XP system inspite of the fact that both the systems are on the same subnet.

I am however able to successfully access the internet from both the guest as well as the host systems!

Please help!

Thanks.
